Hungary announces gigantic road construction scheme

The Hungarian government is to spend 3.2 trillion forints on the development of the country’s public road network by 2024. The lion’s share of the costs, HUF 1.8 trillion, will be covered from the state budget, a state secretary in charge of transport policy at the Ministry of Innovation and Technology announced on Wednesday. A recent government decree has already shown that the end date of the cabinet’s road development is now 2024 instead of 2022.
For the road development scheme the relevant ministers need to earmark HUF 320 bn in 2020, HUF 332 in 2021, HUF 206 bn in 2022, HUF 82 bn in 2023 and HUF 40 bn in 2024, the relevant government decree shows.

This adds up to nearly HUF 1,000 billion, which is less than the HUF 1,800 bn mentioned by the state secretary, but the above list does not include 2019, while there will be major road developments this year, as well (e.g. the M44 expressway linked to the Modern Cities Programme).

The cabinet aims to create a road network that puts at least one dual carriageway within 30-minute driving distance from any given point in the country.

The state secretary also noted that the cabinet is supporting the infrastructural development, the construction of utilities (HUF 10 bn), and the improvement of the railroad (cc. HUF 72 bn) and public road (HUF 44 bn) access of Debrecen’s north-western economic area, the future home of a BMW plant with a grant of nearly HUF 130 billion.Cover photo by MTI/Zsolt Czeglédi
