Mihály Varga was born in Karcag on the 26th of January, 1965. He earned his diploma in 1989 finishing his studies in the Budapest University of Economics, specialised in goods-turnover.
He worked as an economic auditor at the No. 43. National Company for Building Industry, then in 1990 he took a job as an economist at the Eastern Hungarian Water Management Planning Company. Between 1995 and 1997 he was a lecturer and honorary collage teacher at the University of Economics in Szolnok. Between 1998 and 2001 he became the political state secretary of the Ministry of Finance, then until 2002 he served as the Minister of Finance. Between 2010 and 2012 he worked as the state secretary in charge of the Prime Minister's Office, and later as the Minister Without Portfolio responsible for the relations with international financial organisations. Between 2013 and 2018 he served as Minister for National Economy, then from 2018 as Minister of Finance. Between 2018 and 2022 he also served as the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Policy. Between 2017 and 2022 he was the chairman of the National Competitiveness Council. From 2022 he was named Minister of Finance for a new 4 year term.
Minister Mihály Varga is married with four children.
