The number of new cases doubled in a week, from 857 last Tuesday to 1,701.

The number of fatalities has also begun to rise a few weeks after case numbers jumped. This morning’s report includes 44 fatalities, 175% higher than a week earlier.

The number of people in hospital and on ventilator is also increasing swiftly. There are now 1,685 coronavirus patients in hospital, with 197 of them on ventilators.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases has already surpassed that of the second wave a year ago.

The good news is, the number of fatalities is rising slower than a year ago thanks to vaccines and new treatments.

Vaccination uptake is now 5,941,073 (1st dose), 5,721,531 (2nd dose) and 1.12 million (3rd dose).

The proportion of positive tests is also rising. The positivity rate was 15.2% in Monday’s samples.
