COVID-19 in Hungary: less than 200 people on ventilator
Today’s 657 new cases compare to 1,190 just even days ago, for a more than 50% decrease in a week.
The number of people treated in hospital is also falling swiftly, decreasing by nearly 200 in 24 hours.
The receding of the pandemic can be definitely seen in the number of fatalities, which have been decreasing for weeks now. The trend line is now lower than it was between the last two waves of the pandemic, matching figures from last November.
The number of people vaccinated with the first dose is 4,898,866, and 2,886,292 of them have already got the second jab as well. Vaccination coverage has now reached 50% in Hungary. The vaccination drive has picked up pace perceptibly in recent days, probably due to the arrival of further Pfizer shipments. In the past 24 hours, nearly 70,000 first and 71,000 second doses were administered.
A cargo plane owned by the Hungarian government will land in Budapest Friday morning, carrying 700,000 doses of Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine. This will fulfil the contract, Minister of Foreign Trade and Affairs Péter Szijjártó said in a Facebook video on Friday. The airplane made 15 trips in the past three months to deliver Russian and Chinese vaccines to Hungary. Interestingly, the supply contract only had 50,000 doses left, but the Chinese Defence Ministry added a further 200,000 doses as a donation.
