COVID-19 in Hungary: active cases hit new peak
The 2,219 new cases represent a sharp decline compared to the previous day’s data and is far below earlier peaks.
Meanwhile, the number of fatalities was higher than a day before as 136 coronavirus patients died in the past 24 hours. Detailed statistics on the official government website show that the victims included a 20-year-old man who had chronic renal insufficiency.
At present, there are 174,966 active cases in Hungary, the highest number ever. However, the number of new cases in the past 14 days has flattened out.
The number of people being treated in hospital rose to 8,045, another record high. The number of people on ventilators shows slower growth, although this number is also influenced by fatalities in addition to recoveries.
As reported earlier, data disclosure on testing is completely chaotic, with the number of tests applied occasionally jumping significantly. At the time, the Operational Corps said this was because the results of antigen rapid tests were also being included.
The daily testing figure again shows a very similar jump to 195,670, multiple times higher than in preceding days.
This has naturally resulted in a very low positivity rate, which is an important indicator for estimating the spread of the virus. The ratio of positive tests was 1%, compared to between 14% and 24% in previous days due to the data disclosure methodology.
As for regional distribution, Budapest accounts for 19% of active cases, 22% of fatalities and 24% of recoveries. The highest number of total infections since March, 52,788, has been in the capital, followed by Győr-Moson-Sopron county with 16,034.
