COVID-19 in Hungary: fatalities rise to new record high

Portfolio
Hungarian authorities confirmed 6,212 new coronavirus (COVID-19) infections on Thursday, bringing the total since March to 238,056. The death toll rose to 5,513 after the disease claimed the lives of189, mostly elderly or chronic, patients yesterday. Recoveries are now at 68,525, while the number of active cases is 164,018. There are currently 7,812 coronavirus patients in hospital, with 639 of them on ventilators.

There seems to be no decline in the outbreak based on the latest data, although its slowing can be inferred from a couple of signs. The number of daily new cases fluctuates wildly but has not been increasing overall for the past few days, which might mean the pandemic has plateaued. It is even harder to evaluate the situation as we do not know how many new cases the changes in testing practices, in particular a wider range of rapid testing, contribute.

The (allegedly) stagnating daily case numbers have not translated into a lighter load on Hungary’s health care system as the number of sever cases has not decreased, but it is encouraging that the number of coronavirus patients in hospital is rising slower ,while the number of those on ventilators has levelled out, although this latter data appears to go against the wider picture.

Unfortunately, any slight slowing of the outbreak has yet to be reflected in the number of deaths. There were 189 fatalities yesterday, setting a new record for the third day in a row and for the fifth time in the past 7 days. This means the fatality curve is accelerating, and considering the number of extra deaths nationwide in recent weeks compared to previous years, we can say the pandemic is at its worst in Hungary.
