The U.S. State Department has cleared the sale of 60 AIM-120C-7/C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles Extended Range and AMRAAM-ER training missiles to Hungary, the daily Magyar Nemzet reported.

The missile systems, related equipment and support services will complement Hungary’s National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Friday. The deal is worth an estimated USD 230 million (HUF 74.4 bn).

As reported earlier, Hungary is planning to buy Norwegian NASAMS 2 air defense systems, which would work with the AMRAAM missiles.

The export permit does not necessarily mean that Hungary will buy the missiles or the air defense system compatible with them, but is nevertheless an important step in upgrading the country’s military capabilities.
