Mészáros overtakes Csányi as richest Hungarian - Forbes

Portfolio
Lőrinc Mészáros, the emerging business tycoon with close ties to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has replaced OTP Bank president Sándor Csányi at the top of Forbes magazine's annual ranking of richest Hungarians, compiled for the fifth time.
The Top50 list reveals that among the ten richest Hungarians, only Nitrokémia owner László Bige's wealth decreased during 2018. It is also interesting to note that the top five have all amassed considerable property assets, and agriculture is also an increasingly popular area of investment.

Mészáros, who did not even make it to the list five years ago, now has HUF 381.3 billion, making him the richest Hungarian ever, largely thanks to the outstanding performance of his companies' shares on the Budapest Stock Exchange.

Csányi also became richer this year, only at a slower degree, and he also made it to Forbes' global list of dollar billionaires.

The third spot is occupied by György Gattyán (HUF 244.7 bn), whose holding has acquired several foreign companies this year, while his erotic video platform Jasmin has also grown.

The ten richest Hungarians according to Forbes are:
  • Lőrinc Mészáros, HUF 381.3 billion
  • Csányi Sándor, HUF 317.2 billion
  • Gattyán György, HUF 244.7 billion
  • Demján estate, HUF 186 billion
  • Veres Tibor, HUF 160.6 billion
  • Felcsuti Zsolt, HUF 151.5 billion
  • Széles Gábor, HUF 151.2 billion
  • Bige László, HUF 110 billion
  • Szíjj László, HUF 106.2 billion
  • Kasza Lajos, HUF 94.4 billion
